Dogs make a variety of sounds, some of which are common:
- Barking: This is one of the most common sounds dogs make, and is usually used to express excitement, alarm, greeting, or wanting to get the owner's attention. For example, when a stranger approaches, the dog may issue a continuous, relatively loud "barking" sound to indicate vigilance and warning; When the owner comes home, the dog may make a cheerful, short "woof" sound to express joy and excitement.
- Purr: It is usually made when the dog is feeling aggrieved, sad, upset, or in need. For example, when a dog is reprimanded by its owner, it may purr as if to express grievance; When a dog is hungry or wants to go outside to play, it may also communicate its needs to its owner by whining. In addition, dogs will also emit low purrs when they are injured or unwell to indicate distress.
- Growl: Dogs growl when they feel threatened, angry, or ready to defend their territory, food, owner, etc. This sound is usually low and hoarse, with an obvious deterrent connotation, which is a warning to the other party not to approach easily, or it may attack. For example, when another animal enters what the dog considers its territory, it may roar to drive it away.
- Hum: It is generally issued by the dog in a relaxed and comfortable state, such as when the owner massages and strokes it, the dog may make a gentle hum, indicating that it enjoys the process. Sometimes, when a dog is playing or lying down on its own, it will occasionally hum, which is usually a sign that it is happy.
- Howl: Similar to the howl of a Wolf, usually produced by a dog in response to certain stimuli or under certain circumstances. For example, dogs may growl when they hear a more specific sound, such as a siren or the growl of another dog. In addition, some hunting dogs may also growl when tracking their prey.
