SBR (styrene butadiene rubber) and neoprene rubber are different; they have many differences in chemical structure, performance characteristics, uses, etc., as follows:
Chemical structure
- SBR is a synthetic rubber made from the copolymerization of butadiene and styrene, and the molecular chain contains the double bond structure of butadiene and the benzene ring structure of styrene.
- Neoprene rubber: produced by chloroprene monomer through polymerization reaction, the main chain of the molecule contains chlorine atoms, the molecular structure is relatively regular, and there is a strong polarity.
Performance characteristics
- Physical properties: The elasticity and cold resistance of SBR are not as good as those of natural rubber, but also worse than those of neoprene rubber, and it may become hard and brittle at low temperatures. Neoprene rubber has good elasticity and can maintain good flexibility at low temperatures, but its elasticity is usually slightly less than that of natural rubber.
- Aging resistance: SBR has good heat resistance, oxygen resistance, ozone resistance, and solar aging resistance. The aging resistance of neoprene rubber is extremely outstanding, especially the weather aging resistance and ozone resistance, which is second only to ethylene propylene rubber and butyl rubber in general rubber.
- Oil resistance and chemical stability: SBR is a non-polar rubber, which is not resistant to oil, and is prone to swelling in oil media, resulting in decreased performance. In addition to the poor resistance to aromatic hydrocarbons and chlorinated hydrocarbon oils, neoprene rubber is relatively stable in other solvents, and its oil resistance is better than SBR.
- Processing performance: SBR processing heat generation, calendering, pressing deformation, poor adhesion, and difficult to fit forming. Neoprene rubber processing is sensitive to temperature changes, in the range of 70-90 degrees, making it easy to stick roller, easy to burn, shrinkage.

- SBR: Mainly used in the manufacture of tires, which can improve the wear resistance and aging resistance of tires. Also widely used in rubber hose, tape, rubber shoes, wire and cable, auto parts, and other fields, it is one of the largest amounts of synthetic rubber varieties.
- Neoprene rubber: commonly used in the manufacture of heat-resistant transport belts, oil and chemical-resistant hoses, container linings, roller rubber plates, and so on. It can also be used for the production of wire and cable cladding, doors and Windows sealing strips, adhesives, etc., and it also has important applications in construction, automotive, aerospace, and other fields.
