How To Choose The Right Pet Collar Size

A collar that is too tight can cause skin irritation and breathing issues, while one that is too loose is a safety hazard-your dog could "slip the collar" and run into traffic. Here is how to get the perfect fit every time.

1. Measure Twice, Buy Once

Use a soft measuring tape (cloth tape). Measure around the middle of the neck, where the collar would naturally sit. If you don't have a tape measure, use a piece of string and then measure the string against a ruler.

2. The "Two-Finger" Rule

Once the collar is on and buckled, you should be able to snugly fit two fingers between the collar and your dog's neck.

If you can fit three or four fingers, it's too loose.

If you struggle to get two fingers in, it's too tight.

3. Consider the Width

The size isn't just about the circumference; it's about the width of the webbing.

Small Dogs: 5/8" or 3/4" width prevents the collar from being too heavy.

Large/Strong Dogs: 1" to 2" width distributes pressure more evenly across the neck, preventing injury.
