Why Does Apple Not Recommend AirTags For Pets?

Apple does not recommend the use of AirTags for pets for the following reasons:

Safety hazard

  • Easy to swallow: The diameter of the AirTag is 31.9mm, which is a size that poses a risk of swallowing for medium or large dogs. Many cases of dogs swallowing airtags have been reported abroad, and veterinarians have even treated six dogs for swallowing airtags in the past 18 months.
  • Battery hazard: AirTag's CR2032 battery can leak corrosive liquids if damaged. When a battery is chewed and swallowed by a pet, it can cause injury to the mouth or stomach, or even poisoning.

Trace restriction

  • Device-dependent: AirTag relies on nearby Apple devices to transmit location information, and if a pet goes to a remote area with fewer Apple devices, such as rural areas, its location may be inaccurate or unavailable.
  • Unable to track in real time: AirTag is not like a professional GPS tracker can track the movement of pets in real time, only when communicating with Apple devices will update the location information, there is a certain time difference, can not meet the needs of owners to grasp the real-time location of pets at any time.
  • Why it's designed: AirTag is designed to track objects, not creatures. In the design, Apple mainly considers the item tracking scene, and does not optimize for the special needs and use scenarios of pets, such as how to prevent pets from biting and breaking away.
