What Are Chinese Guard Dogs?

"Chinese guard dogs", if taken literally, usually refer to dogs used to guard homes in China, and there are many breeds that fulfill this role, such as the Chinese pastoral dog, the Tibetan mastiff, etc. However, if this is a figurative or symbolic statement, it may have different meanings, and the following aspects are specific for you:

Dog breed

• Chinese Pastoral dog: The traditional name is "soil dog", and some places in the north are also called "Chai dog", which is one of the oldest dog breeds in China. Its character is relatively docile, not easy to take the initiative to attack humans, can live in groups, strong regionalism, easy to raise, high loyalty, in the countryside and some old communities and so often can see their home care figure, is a very typical "guard dog".
• Tibetan Mastiff: Native to the Tibetan Plateau in China, it is a tall, fierce breed of dog. Tibetan mastiffs are extremely loyal to their owners, have a strong sense of territory, and have a high degree of vigilance to strangers. Their strength and momentum are enough to deter potential intruders. They are often used to guard homes and sheep in Tibetan areas and other areas, and are also very famous "guard dogs".

Metaphor or symbol

• May refer to people: In some derogatory contexts, "guard dogs" may be used to describe those who guard the door for others, do some maintenance of order or surveillance work for some benefit, and are considered to lack autonomy and only follow orders. This is a rather negative and disrespectful statement.
• May refer to institutions or things: Sometimes it is possible to use "watchdog" to describe some institutions or things that play a supervisory and guardian role, such as some departments or systems responsible for security and order maintenance, but this usage is relatively rare, and usually has a certain joke or specific contextual meaning.
