The legality of electronic collars in the UK varies by region, as follows:
- Wales: The use of electronic collars on dogs is illegal in Wales under the Animal Welfare (Electronic Collars) (Wales) Regulations 2010. The ban also applies to any device designed to cause pain or discomfort to dogs, except in limited circumstances such as veterinary treatment or training of working dogs.
- England: From 1 February 2024, the Animal Welfare (Electronic Collars) (England) Regulations 2023 will come into force, banning the wearing of electronic collars on cats or dogs, with fines for violators. An exception is made when members of the armed forces act for the purpose of national defense.
- Scotland: Electronic collars are currently legal in Scotland. However, in 2018 the Scottish Government issued guidance against the use of such devices and other obnoxious training methods.
- Northern Ireland: There are currently no legal restrictions on the use or sale of electronic collars in Northern Ireland.
